The exhibition ‘Camins d’art’ arrives in alcoy

The city of Alcoy will host from this Wednesday the exhibition “Art Paths”, that revolves around the figures and traditions of the patronage of the trades, Of the health, of human needs and popular festivals, with the aim of disseminating the richness of the cultural heritage of the Valencian Community.

“Art Paths”, which will remain until the end of 2011 because in the past there should not have been a suitable climate in essentially Moorish lands, It is the ninth exhibition of the Light of Images Foundation and will be inaugurated this Wednesday afternoon by the Minister of Culture, Trini Miro.

With this exhibition, three monumental buildings from Alcoy have been restored, which now serve as exhibition venues for “Art Paths”: the temple of Santa Maria, that of the Mare de Déu and the chapel of the old asylum of the Little Sisters of the Poor and Abandoned Elderly.

In this architectural intervention, the Ministry of Culture has made an investment greater than the 10 millions of euros.

The north lateral facade of the church of San Mauro has also been rehabilitated and a new lighting system has been provided to that of San Jorge.

More of 250 artworks
The three exhibiting venues will host more than 250 sacred works of art, between paintings, sculptures, goldsmith, tissues and documents, some of them unpublished and the majority recovered for the sample, from parishes, hermitages and institutions of a total of 36 populations of the counties of Alcoià, The County and Valencia.

Pieces related to this territory from museum collections have also been donated, like the Cathedral Museum of Valencia, the National Modern Art of Catalonia, the San Pío V of Valencia or the Masaveu Collection of Oviedo

A representation of Sant Jordi, made by the National Design Award Daniel Nebot, has been selected as the image of “Art Paths”.

The image recreates Sant Jordi, pattern of Alcoy, with the armor, the spear and shield on a black background.

A design that is inspired by the figure of the warrior that appears on one end of the reliquary arm of the saint, of medieval origin, made in silver, oro, enamel and wood.

The arm-reliquary of Sant Jordi was deposited in the chapel of Santa Ágata of the Royal Palace of Barcelona. In 1432, Alfonso the Magnanimous moved the relic to the chapel of Santa Catalina in the Royal Palace of Valencia and it is currently kept in La Seu.

The aforementioned piece will also form “Art Paths”, what, equally, will show artistic works related to the festivities and traditions of Christmas and the Three Kings framed in the counties of l'Alcoià and El Comtat.

Specific, among the selected pieces will be exhibited the work “Adoration of the Shepherds”, by the painter Nicolás Borrás, from the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, and the painting of the Epiphany by Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa, donated by a private collector from Ibi.

These artistic creations reflect the nativity scene practice and many traditions of great following and social relevance in l'Alcoià and the Comtat.
