Brotherhood of St. George

Brotherhood meeting

When the new Board of the Brotherhood of San Jorge takes office, in may 1988, The first project we decided to launch was the construction of a hermitage dedicated to our Patron..

As previously, a hermitage located in our municipal area had been dismantled stone by stone., its reconstruction was agreed, commissioning the project to the architect Don Francisco Picó Silvestre. In the place occupied by the original hermitage of San Jorge, popularly known as “The Conjurer”, it is not possible, for urban reasons, raising it again; so it was agreed to build it in the “cementeri vell” by common agreement with the City Council., that will landscape the rest of the lot. This decision was approved by the Parish Council at its meeting in October 1988.

With this project we obtain, among other objectives, May our Patron have his hermitage again, magnify the procession of the transfer before and after festivities and dignify the farewell of mourning at funerals, since it can be done in the hermitage and not like now in “la Mateta”.

The day 8 of January of 1989, at eleven thirty hours, A Solemn Mass took place in the Parish, concelebrated by our Parish Priest and Coadjutor in thanksgiving and in suffrage for our deceased, attended by the City Council, Parish council, presidents, captains and flags of the troupes, other authorities, Board of the Brotherhood and numerous faithful.

Holy Mass finished, preceded by the Parish Cross, They went out in procession with the script of Saint George to the “cementeri vell”, where, after blessing her, The first stone was laid by Don José Barceló Sanjuán, Mayor; Don Ricardo Díaz de Rabago and Verdeguer, Priest, and Don Francisco Fernando Belda Llopis, President of the Brotherhood of San Jorge, using three artistic silver palettes, those that were later handed over to the Councilors, Presidents and Captains of troupes and Board of the Brotherhood, respectively, to participate in said event.

A tube was placed inside the first stone, tightly closed, containing: Notarial Certificate, signed by the Mayor and Parish Priest; list of City Hall signatures, Parish Council and Brotherhood Board; complete list of the Brotherhood of San Jorge; commemorative card, coins and stamps of the time; three photographs of Banyeres, two current and one of 1887; the Hallelujah, and the City newspapers, Information and the Truth, in which this news is collected.

The Architect spoke, President of the Brotherhood, Parish Priest and Mayor. A fireworks and the ringing of all the bells of the Villa, They pointed out the joy of an entire town at the beginning of this work. The Hymn to Saint George was sung by everyone and, then, Those attending the event placed a handful of sand on the first stone, as a sign of collaboration. Mr. Notary of Banyeres kept records of all these events for better record. The protocol used has been the same, as far as possible, which our ancestors followed in laying the first stone of the current parish temple.

The Sant Jordi Philatelic Club organized a Philatelic Exhibition on the days 7 Y 8 from January, with a special postmark commemorating this anniversary, the Brotherhood editing a memory card.

The Brotherhood thanks all the people for their assistance and collaboration on this historic day.

The popular subscription has been opened to cover the expenses of the reconstruction of the hermitage, which we hope to see finished soon, for the greater glory of Our Patron Sant Jordi.
